What Actually Drives the Cost of Data Center Commissioning

Tier Level
Tier III concurrent-maintainability testing and Tier IV fault-tolerance testing are genuinely different scopes of work, not the same testing done twice. Facility Scale
Commissioning cost doesn't scale purely linearly with megawatt count. Past roughly 50 MW, shared infrastructure dependency between sections adds coordination complexity that increases commissioning time per megawatt, not just total time.
Testing Scope
How many building systems are actually in scope — power, cooling, network, life safety, BMS integration — and how deep the integrated systems testing goes changes the total testing hours significantly. A narrow scope focused only on power and cooling costs meaningfully less than full integrated systems testing across every building system.
When Commissioning Gets Involved
Commissioning brought in during design review costs less per issue caught than commissioning compressed into the weeks before substantial completion, because problems found on paper are cheaper to fix than problems found in an installed system.
